Relaxation, Networking and Practice! No more, no less. Three key words that capture the whole essence of the UNIABIDJAN Language Club; a subset of the UNIABIDJAN Leaders Club, a larger umbrella body that brings together all UNIABIDJAN students and gives life to extra-curricular activities on campus.
The language club seeks to bridge cultural gap, create a sense of unity and promote bilingualism/multilingualism among members of the university community who are from diverse backgrounds and nationalities.
Its activities include vocabulary development and grammar series, group discussions, debates, quiz competitions, educational movie shows, poetry, songs and drama, symposiums, personality development talk-shows, entrepreneurial round tables, leadership and mentoring, and volunteer community services.
UNIABIDJAN Language Club is as well open to members of the public; students and workers alike. Members pay token monthly subscription fees for refreshments and to keep the club activities running smoothly and independently. Category A and B members who are UNIABIDJAN students and members of the public pay 5000F; Category C are Universite Felix Houphouet Boigny students who pay 2000F; and Category D are working class club members (UBA, GTB, AfDB,CIE, IMF etc) who pay 10, 000F a month.
Club activities are anchored in both English and French and they are geared primarily towards recreation, professional networking and language practice. Members converge at the UNIABIDJAN Multipurpose Hall every Saturday from 9am to 12 noon.
Traditionally held before the beginning of the new academic session since its inception in 2012, “Salon de l’Orientation d’Abidjan” is a platform that allows higher institutions of learning to showcase their services to freshly-minted and old high schools leavers. During this educational fair, students and their parents or guardians and other education stakeholders visit the stands of different schools to get as much information as they can.
Just like in the 2017 edition, The University of Abidjan is again present at this year’s fair; more colorfully and actively. UNIABIDJAN is motivated by her corporate social responsibilities of ensuring that these youngsters are properly guided and given the right orientations as to their choices of higher institutions and careers. This is because they embody not just the hope of Cote d’Ivoire but also the future of our continent.
It is our belief that the high rate of failure, drop-outs, disillusionment in higher institutions of learning coupled with the attendant ill-preparedness for the labor market may not be unconnected with the poor career guidance and counseling that these students were exposed to, or even lack thereof. The “Salon de l’Orientation d’Abidjan” offers empowerment and development-oriented schools like UNIABIDJAN a platform to frontally confront this societal menace and nip it in the bud.
The University of Abidjan always reiterates to those who visit its stand the importance of developing skill sets that are relevant to the 21st century work place: bilingualism if not multilingualism, leadership skills, entrepreneurial and innovation mindset, critical thinking, problem-solving skill, effective communication, cognitive flexibility and professionalism.
UNIABIDJAN stands are open to all and for all enquiries throughout the duration of the Salon de l’Orientation from 8am to 6pm of Thursday July 26 to Saturday July 28, 2018 at the popular Lycée Classique d’Abidjan, Cocody. This will be followed up with our Career Guidance, Counseling and Orientation Week at the school premises in Riviera-Attoban. The date of this Open Day programme will be communicated subsequently on our website and social media platforms.
The language lab is a place where students come to improve and gain mastery of their language of choice. The lab is equipped with the relevant technologies to assist students in that regard.
