Computer Science



Our Bachelor of Science in Computer Science provides students with a sound technical training that includes topics from a number of emerging areas, including web tool development, network and wireless communication, animated graphics, artificial life, and robotics. The program meets the requirements of contemporary job market. In almost all sectors of activity, there is a strong demand for bilingual (English-French) computer scientists.

Indeed, a preliminary study taking into account the evolution of technology and several exchanges with professionals in the field of Information andCommunication Technology inspired its establishment.

The computer science sector is booming and in perpetual evolution; its applications are omnipresent, notably thanks to free software, and its research advances irrigate many other sciences. In every country in the world, there is a need to recruit many computer scientists, or scientists with a strong computer science culture; the job prospects are long-lasting and important, whether at the Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree) or beyond (Ph.D) level.

This Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science is designed to meet this need by offering a generalist and advanced scientific education in the field.

So, our Department of Computer Science provides students with the background knowledge and course work to pursue a variety of interesting career building opportunities both during their time as students through internships, in industry, education and (post)graduate studies.

It is in line with the LMD approach and inspired by similar programs in force in Ivorian public universities as well as in other English-speaking universities in the world. The program has been designed to be equivalent in content to the Bachelor’s degree in North American universities while being adapted to the Ivorian context (180 credits); and make students immediately operational in the bilingual job market.

Course content

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is a four-year program (eight semesters) for a total of 180 credits. Courses are divided into core, specialty, methodology, and general studies units.

Seminars and conferences integrated into the program provide opportunities to strengthen students’ managerial, legal, accountability, ethical, and personal development skills in additional to their professional course of study.

The practice of English by students is a permanent concern of UNIABIDJAN.  This is the reason for the existence of a language lab and clubs that allow students to grow while practicing the English language. From the first to the last year of their studies, students’ progress through a program of English instruction that takes them from beginners to intermediate to advanced English after an initial test. 

The syllabus

At UNIABIDJAN, each teacher will be required to provide a syllabus of his or her course according to a model designed by the Academic Directorate and to submit a copy with the Head of Department before starting the course. The syllabus model in force at UNIABIDJAN respects international standards. The catalogue of all the courses of the program is found in models, classified by semester.

The organization of Bachelor’s courses at UNIABIDJAN is based on the provisions of Order No. 249/MESRS/DGES/December 13, 2011 of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, organizing the Bachelor’s degree in the LMD system. The courses are divided into autonomous semesters. Each semester has a duration of 12 to 16 weeks. The number of credits required to validate a semester is 30 CECT, or 750 hours of CTT.



– Entry in Year1: must hold a BAC, WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB or equivalent

– Entry in Year 2: must have completed at least 80% of the credits of Year 1

– Entry in Year 3: must have completed all the credits of Year 1 and 2 or hold a BTS/OND, a DUT in Computer Science of related courses.


Laptop/Computer Requirements

Students for need a laptop/computer that meets the specifications for the program. These requirements are higher than those in other programs at UNIABIDJAN. Therefore, students need to review them with the program head before purchasing their laptops/computers.

Students must bring their laptops to all classes that require such. The University provides free high speed internet access on campus. For online classes, students are responsible for their own high speed internet connection.

Grading system and assessment of studies

All theoretical and practical courses given at UNIABIDJAN are subject to the assessment of the acquired knowledge and skills (the minimum requirement is two intermediate tests and one final test): one aptitude test after every 12 hours of classes.

The assessment is awarded a mark between 0 and 20, the range of which corresponds to the following grades:

Students’ final grade is determined as follows:

The student is subjected to a test after every 12 hours of lectures, and then to a final examination. However, the lecturer is permitted to conduct a voluntary assessment (e.g., presentation).

Number of assessments

The number of assessments is a minimum of three, that is to say two (02) evaluations during the program and one (01) summative assessment. These are usually done via the university online platform.

Students’ convening notice

The examination period is known in advance as indicated on the academic calendar.

– The examination schedule is published on the online platform and posted on notice board according to the annual academic calendar;

– The examination calendar includes the date, time, class specifications and authorized documents and materials.

In the absence of a concise indication, no document or material is authorized.

Organization of the examination

UNIABIDJAN is responsible for the form, nature and content of the examination.

The institution is required to provide an administrative service consisting of:

– preparing the examination schedule

– providing the attendance list

– ensuring the good condition of the class/hall and the facilities

– ensuring that the room is accessible to all

– informing the supervisors of the exams

It should be noted that all this is done for the smooth running of the exams.

Supervision of physical examination halls

-Students access to the examination hall

-Students who arrive thirty (30) minutes after the start of the examination are not allowed to enter the examination hall.

-No additional time will be allowed for a candidate who arrives late.

– The students, when coming to the exam’s venue, must

– carry an ID card;

– be ready to sit for the exam alone;

– wait until the end of the first 15 minutes of the examination to leave the room (even if he/she hands in a blank sheet);

– submit the answer booklet and sign before leaving the examination hall

– refrain from disturbing the examination exercise (no smoking, turn off all mobile phones)

Students who ask to leave the hall temporarily must drop their scripts to the invigilator, who will give them back when they return.

NB: Students with disabilities are allowed an additional third of the time to complete the exam.


UNIABIDJAN must ensure that:

-exams of the same duration are written in the same hall

-the hall must include at least one invigilator who will be in charge of the hall

-the invigilator is aware of the special considerations given to certain candidates (handicapped, etc.).

 The invigilator

UNIABIDJAN must ensure that the supervisor:

-is effectively and physically present in the hall at least fifteen minutes before the beginning of the examination;

-checks the physical preparation of the hall;

-checks the identity of the candidates at the entrance to the hall or by going through the rows.

-In the absence of an identity card, the verification is made at the end of the examination;

-make sure the candidates sign the attendance sheet;

-reads the protocols guiding the examination to the candidates;

-verifies that each candidate has submitted his or her copy (count the copies before leaving the room)

The report

At the end of the examination, the invigilator must fill out the examination report, which includes the following information

– The number of students present, or absent ;

– The number of papers submitted;

– The observations or incidents noted during the exam.

Return the completed and signed report, the attendance sheet and the sign-in sheet to the student affairs department.

Modalities for validating the Credit Units (CU)

Each Credit Unit is validated by obtaining an average of at least 60 out of 100 (Average > 60/100).

The CU are composed of several elements, they can be obtained by calculating the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) between its constituent elements. This calculation is only possible between CUs done within a semester on the basis of graded averages. The CU thus calculated are validated. Once the CU is aggregated, hence the corresponding hours of lectures have been completed.

Modalities of validating the Semester

A semester is completed only if the student has:

– acquired all the corresponding CUs, in other words, 22 to 30 credits according to the Ivorian National System of ‘LMD’;

– acquired the CU by compensation provided that the average is not less than 60.

Therefore, a panel of examiners will validate the semester. The University President appoints the President and members of the panel at the end of each semester. The panel is made up of the level advisers. The President of the panel oversees the coherence and smooth running of the process and draws up the reports.

Procedures for the 2nd session, carry over and expulsion (student follow-up/failure management)

Any student not admitted in the first session must sit for failed courses/subjects during the second session, as well as carry over courses and also if the candidate is unable to complete a semester. In other words, at the make-up exam, it is verified that

– the student has not completed the course unit in question, i.e. he/she has an average of less than 60/100;

– within the non-validated course units, there is a subject or subjects whose mark is lower than 60/100.

These are the courses/subjects that the student retakes unless the panel has decided otherwise.

The other marks (above or equal to 60/100) being acquired, those of the make-up session are taken into consideration in the calculation of the GPA of the semester in question.

N.B: The grade of the second session (make-up session) is the only one taken into account, even if it is lower than the grade of the first session.

The second session takes place at the beginning of July, two months before the beginning of the academic year which is generally in September.

For these sets of students, UNIABIDJAN provides them with a series of exercises and their corrections. During their preparation period for the second session, the student is supervised by the lecturer of the concerned course.

As for students repeating their year, UNIABIDJAN provides them with reinforcement courses which are not free of charge.

The Reception, Information and Tutoring Service provides permanent information, follow-up and support for students, in order to facilitate their integration into the university system and their access to information on the global workforce. It allows students to be accompanied throughout their program. Based on the information received from this service, the Division of Students Affairs takes into account extreme cases (expulsions) and makes recommendations to parents and the Academic Senate.

Professional Experience

Place and duration of internships in companies

Internships are part of the university curriculum. They are primarily offered to students enrolled in the last year of the Bachelor’s program (400 level), but they can also be taken by 300 level students with outstanding performance. Depending on the agreements in place with certain partner universities, these internships can also be done abroad.

There are several types of internships: observation internships, accompanied practice internships or internships with responsibility. The number of internships available can vary depending on the host organization. These internships are organized for a period of 90 days or three (03) months.

Follow-up and evaluation

During the internship, the student is monitored in three ways:

– A supervising lecturer;

– The supervisor of internships at UNIABIDJAN

– The guardian in the host company

Each party has a specific role to play vis-à-vis the intern:

– The supervising lecturer ensures the pedagogical monitoring of the intern: choice of theme, writing of the report, defence.

– The school’s internship supervisor monitors the student’s attendance

– The guardian within the host company ensures the integration of the intern in the organization and the proper execution of his/her tasks.

Implementation and monitoring of the internship charter

The University of Abidjan submits an internship agreement to each partner or prospective partner company for the placement of its students. After validation of this agreement, a letter requesting the internship is sent to the head of the host company. The host organization provides the University with the number of places available and the internship period.

It is on the basis of this information that the firm prepares the files of future interns.

Conditions for awarding the diploma

The student aspiring to the Bachelor’s degree must meet the following conditions of eligibility:

  1. must have completed all the required credits;
  2. must have completed his or her internship.

At the end of the eligibility, the student completes an internship which is approved by writing and defense of an internship report or project.

The internship

The necessity of an internship for the student is to immerse him/herself in the realities and daily life of the company, by temporarily integrating him/herself into the labour market and professional world.

The internship also allows the student to experiment with the theoretical and practical concepts taught in class and to better understand the logic of how organizations function. This immersion aims to reduce the period of adaptation to working conditions in the company at the end of the theoretical part of the study.

The internship is a special opportunity for the student to negotiate his or her definite integration within the host company, by his or her outstanding work ethic, his or her attendance and his or her effectiveness in carrying out the tasks he or she is required to accomplish.

The internship reports (project writing)

The student writes an internship report based on the experience acquired during the two (02) to three (03) months spent in the company.

The internship report presents the results of a study or a project entrusted by the host company and is the subject of a discussion of the ideas, concepts and projects developed.


Conditions for awarding the degree

The Bachelor’s degree is definitively acquired when all the following conditions are met:

– having completed all the credits (maximum of 180);

– to have completed the internship/written the final year project;

– must have successfully defended the internship report/final year project.

However, students who have accumulated 80 hours of unjustified absences over the course of the program will not be allowed to sit for the final exam of the program.

Composition and functioning of the jury

The Academic Senate, in agreement with the Senate members, proposes to the University President, the list of the President and members of the defence panel. The President of the panel is responsible for the coherence and smooth running of the entire process. He/she is responsible for drawing up the official reports.

The defence panel is composed of three (03) members. They are:

– the President of the panel

– the Director of the Program

– a professional in connection with the field of study in question

The professional in relation to the subject is an external expert invited by the institution for this purpose. This person may come from a foreign institution partnering with UNIABIDJAN.

The student forwards a complete file to each member of the panel three (3) weeks before the presentation.

The presentation of the internship report is public. The student’s file is examined by the other members of the panel and each one sends a report to the President.

The student makes a presentation to the panel of judges (jury) on all of his or her work and, possibly, a section of it, a demonstration. This presentation results in a discussion with the panel.


The panel examines the student’s value, evaluates his or her ability to conceive, direct, lead and coordinate his or her activities and decides on the award of the certificate.

The president of the panel, after having gathered the opinion of the members of the panel, draws up a report; this report is countersigned by all the members of the panel and communicated to the student.

Awarding of the certificate/degree

The Bachelor’s degree is delivered under the seal and in the name of UNIABIDJAN during a graduation ceremony.
